The General Management Club kick started the Alumni Interaction Series with a talk given by Mr. Arjun Shankar Srinivasan. Arjun is from the class of 2003 and is presently working as Deputy General Manager with Cognizant Technologies.
In his address to the club audience he stressed upon the importance of mapping our strengths to the requirements that the role entails, and then deciding on what roles/functions do we fit best into.
For those of us looking to pursue the coveted roles in General management he identified a few key skills that we need to build upon in order to be successful.
The one most important thing, according to him, that could make the biggest difference is the skill to interact with people. He encouraged us to indulge in group based activities as much as possible.
He also reiterated the importance of communication skills and the key role that negotiation skills can play in ensuring that we grow into effective managers.
Industry knowledge is a must. His advice to the students was to work on building extensive industry knowledge, especially staying abreast of the latest developments in the industries which lie in our area of interest.
He also gave us some idea of the various GM roles offered at ISB and the responsibilities that these roles entail.
